First Everest Base Camp trekking on joelette wheelchair
My Company Asian Mountain Adventure is one of the leading trekking companies in Nepal that organizes unique and difficult tours. On November 2, 2024, a group of 30 people from Spain (Barcelona) decided to make us their travel companion. The group included people with different abilities: people with fibromyalgia, chronic pain, heart problems, autism, octogenarians and a person in a wheelchair who used a joëlette chair. The group was organized and led by Mayte Serrat, president of the CIM Project, an inclusive mountain club from spain Barcelona. The two of us together, she and I (Hari -Spanish speaking guide and Director of Asian Mountain Adventure) with her entity and my company, were the first in the world to organize an expedition of these characteristics. It was our responsibility to complete the difficult journey to Everest Base Camp at 5364 M. with complete safety and security.
It was a bit challenging for me and my company because it was necessary to create a new history. But we believed nothing is impossible and kept going. So with a following group of 31 people (Esther , Carla , Maria , Cristina , Alberto-he was with Joelette , Laura , Maria Ciudad , Pau , Rafael , Susana , Itziar , Lolanda , Miguel , Daniel , Ruben , Maria Teresa , Arcadi , Antonio , Mayte , Carolina , Mireia , Angel , Miquel , Jordi , Carmen , Maria alis , Lida , Jaime , Encarnacion , Maria teresa encuentra) including a guide and director (Hari) of Asian Mountain Adventure who has fluent spanish ,also with two helper guide (Shiva and Dipendra) kept the motive of reaching Lukla the same day they landed on Nepal (2nd of November).
We left for Lukla at around 10PM, after 6 hours of travel we finally reached Manthali on 4 AM and waited for the flight to Lukla. But there was a problem due to the weather so we were not able to get a flight to Lukla on 3rd November. So we decided to stay in Manthali. At that point of time we all were panicked and the only question that was hitting our head was what if we won’t be able to reach our destination? What if we fail? One member(Carlos) from our group decided to go back to his country(Barcelona) and he reached Barcelona on 5th November safely. We all were praying for better weather conditions. As it is said that after every dark night there is a bright day and for us 4th November was the bright day. With a group of 30 people we reached Lukla(2800m) at 11 AM through three different flights on 4th November. On the very day we decided our agenda with 7 people carrying bags ,5 Yak to carry loads and 10 people to provide help for the movement of the wheelchair. So with 50 people we were all set for the journey and after walking for three hours straight we reached Phakding and decided to settle there for that day. On 5th November we reached Namche(3440m) and stayed there. If you want to visit Nepal Asian Mountain Adventure company is best trekking company in Nepal for your journey.
On 6th November we stayed on Namche for acclimatize by starting a hike from Sagarmatha National Park to Everest View Hotel(3860m). The hotel is the 5 star level hotel lying at the highest point in the world where we got the opportunity to witness the beauty of kusum kangeru , Thamserku, Ama Dablam, Lhotese, Mt.Everest, Nuptse, Tauche, Cholatse, Kongde etc. Then we went back to Namche bazar and stayed there for 2 days. On 7th November we got a beautiful opportunity to witness the historical religion of the Monastery on Tengboche(3860m) and stayed in Dibuche. On 8th November we reached Dingboche(4410m) and stayed there for two days. On 9th November we went on Nagarjun dada (4985m) and our eyes were blessed with a view of different Mountains including Mt.Makalu 8485 m, . We stayed at Lobuche(4930m) on 10th November.
After 3 hours of walk on 11th November we reached at Gorek Shep(5180m) and we stayed at the lodge situated at the highest point in the world. We decided to take a rest and some of our friends went to kala patthar(5545m) area and some were a little ill. But we all were there to provide them care and love. 12th November was the day that we all were waiting for. With the strong hope of success we were ready. It was not easy as we imagined it to be. With the help of Nepali people of our group we were able to help Albert Cogul with the Joelette wheelchair despite the glaciers. We continued our journey even though there were difficulties. With 26 tourists including one tourist in joelette wheelchair at about 11 am we were successful on reaching Everest Base Camp(5364m). At that moment we all were too stunned to speak. We all were speechless because all the handworks paid off. Everyone were celebrating knowing the fact that we were successful in making the first ever record in Europe and Nepal on reaching Everest Base Camp with a person in a wheelchair. We were full of tears and joy. We even started making videos and taking interviews and congratulate each other on the great success. At about 12 Am we step out from the base camp and move towards Gorak shep .
On that very day we went to Pheriche (4300m) for a stay. We all were proud of each other for being able to create a world record in Europe, Nepal for a successful attempt to Everest Base Camp with a person in joelette wheelchair. It is even the biggest achievement for my company Asian Mountain Adventure. On the very day of success the news was all around Spain(Barcelona). We all were very happy to be part of the news and celebrated it by dancing. On 13th November we returned back to Namche. We were known and celebrated everywhere. At that moment of time we felt like great celebrities because every single person were congratulating us.On 14th November we returned back to Lukla, had dinner and celebrated the success. It was our plan to return to Kathmandu on 15th November but due to bad weather we had a flight on 16th November and on that day we reached Kathmandu. On 17th November my company Asian Mountain Adventure decided to thank every single tourist and CIM project for the success and for believing in us. We provided them some gifts and certificates. It was the time for waving goodbye to them which was really tough. With eyes full of tears I managed to wave them goodbye in the airport.
My company would like to thank everyone for their hard work. First of all, I am very much grateful to my Father Mr.Katak Bahadur Kharel, the first ever person in my village to get involved in tourism. Because of him I had the courage to move forward and to achieve whatever I have in my life. Today he is the happiest because his hardwork has paid off. Very much thankful towards the CIM project and Mayte Serrat the president of the CIM project for organizing the group in Barcelona and for making them part of our company. There are no words to thank you for choosing and believing in us. We would even like to thank Albert Cogul (the man in a wheelchair) for taking the initiative of exploring the beauty of Nepal in a joelette wheelchair. You don’t have the idea about how much you have inspired everyone. Even though you couldn’t walk you still choose to be a part of this journey so we are proud of you.to each and every member involved in this recordable journey, i would like to express my deepest gratitude towards all of you. To all those people who helped us on carrying bags, moving joelette wheelchairs and the hotels for their warmest hospitality we are really thankful towards you. The people involved in making it to the news, we are very much thankful towards you. In future we hope to get this kind of opportunity to work with you. We have tired our best to make your travel fun and safe.
